WARSAW, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission said Thursday it had decided to allocate 164.4 million euros from the Cohesion Fund for the construction of the last missing section of an expressway running between western and central Poland.

The 54 km-long planned section is part of S5 expressway linking Poznan and Bydgoszcz. The expressway will form part of the trans-European transport network.

The European Commission's Regional Policy Commissioner Corina Cretu said the investment would have a positive impact on the local economy and territorial cohesion. She added that the whole of central Poland would benefit from the project.

According to the data from Polish Development Ministry, the cost of the investment is to reach PLN 1.4 billion (330 million euros), with PLN 716 million (169.2 million euros) to come from the European Union's Infrastructure and Environment Programme.

The section is expected to be operational by the end of 2019. The completion of the entire project will improve traffic safety and reduce travel time between Poland's central and western regions.
