WARSAW, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Polish President Andrzej Duda on Wednesday offered his condolences to the loved ones of the New York City terrorist attack victims.

"My thoughts and prayers are with our friends in NYC. We stand united against terror", the Polish president wrote on Twitter earlier on Wednesday.

Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski has also offered his condolences to the loved ones of the NYC terrorist attack victims.

"We share our sorrow and pain with the families of the victims of the terrorist attack in New York City", the minister wrote on Twitter following the attack.

On Tuesday at about 15:00 local time, an attacker drove a rented pick-up truck into pedestrians, joggers, skaters and cyclists on a cycle path on the banks of the Hudson River in Manhattan, New York.

Eight people were killed and 11 injured. After driving about 1.5 km, the attacker hit another vehicle, left the truck and started to run away shouting "Allahu Akbar!" ("God is greatest").

A police officer shot and injured the attacker in the stomach. According to the authorities, the attacker acted alone. Local media reported that the man had left a note making reference to the so-called Islamic State militant group.

Polish Consul General to New York Maciej Golubiewski announced Tuesday that no Polish people were reported to have been harmed in the attack.

According to sources close to the investigation, the alleged attacker was Sayfullo Saipov, an immigrant from Uzbekistan who entered the U.S. in 2010 under the diversity visa program.
