JALALABAD, Afghanistan, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Up to 22 IS militants including two of their mentors were killed following Afghan forces airstrikes in eastern Nangarhar province on Sunday, an official said Monday.

The strikes took place Sunday evening when Afghan air force aircraft bombed IS militants hideouts in parts of Nangarhar province and adjoining areas, leaving 22 fighters dead, Shirin Aqa Faqiri, a spokesman of national army in the eastern region told Xinhua.

The province has Jalalabad as its capital, which is located 120 km east of Kabul.

However, some local reports suggested Monday that 40 IS fighters had been killed in overnight operations in the eastern region.

The hardliner IS group has yet to make comments on the report.
