JERUSALEM, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Israeli soldiers shot and wounded a Palestinian after he allegedly ran towards them with a knife in his hand in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Wednesday, the military said.

The incident took place at the Gush Etzion Junction, near a major settlement bloc in central West Bank.

"An assailant armed with a knife ran towards IDF (Israel Defense Forces) troops," a military spokesperson said in a statement. The soldiers shot at the suspect's legs, wounding him, the spokesperson added.

The suspect, whose identity was not disclosed, was arrested and taken for hospital care in Israel, according to the spokesperson.

The military's Spokesperson Unit also released a photo of a spring knife and identified it as the knife held by the suspect.

The incident came a few hours after the army raided eight Palestinian media firms across the West Bank, and shut down some of them, citing "incitement" against Israel.

Since September 2015, a surge of violence in the West Bank and Israel have claimed the lives of at least 293 Palestinians, mostly were attackers, according to Israel, and 49 Jewish Israelis.

Israel accuses the Palestinian National Authority of "inciting" the unrest. The Palestinians say it is the result of 50 years of Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, home to more than 5 million Palestinians.
