Qatar to finance budget of Global Dryland Alliance for 2 years: PM

DOHA, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Qatar will bankroll the operational budget of the Global Dryland Alliance(GDA) for two years and will also host its headquarters in Doha, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani said, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported Monday.

With the attendance of several ministers and delegates from a number of dryland countries around the world, Al-Thani announced that in his speech during inaugurating the GDA founding conference held under the patronage of the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on Sunday in Doha, the report said.

The success of GDA is vital as food security is a priority on the agendas of national policies and programmes of regional and international organizations, and despite increasing global awareness on food security, millions of people in the world are suffering from food scarcity, the prime minister mentioned.

The prime minister referred to the important role of GDA which will promote partnerships with public and private sector to fund and implement programmes and projects of member countries to ensure food security, in addition to fighting desertification, land deterioration and drought.
