SOFIA, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Bulgaria and Romania are to sign a memorandum to carry out a study on the construction of a new bridge over the Danube near Ruse, officials said here on Wednesday.

The memorandum is to lay the foundations for improving transport and increasing economic activity in the region, the Government Information Service said in a statement.

Currently, only two bridges, the Ruse-Giurgiu and the Vidin-Kalafat, link the two countries along their shared 470-km river border.

However, an analysis showed that road traffic on the Ruse-Giurgiu bridge has grown significantly in recent years, while the bridge put into operation more than 60 years ago can not alleviate the traffic due to its limit on technical capabilities, the statement said.

The second bridge, Vidin-Kalafat, was opened in 2013.
