BRATISLAVA, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Transport on the Slovak side of the Danube river is still halted, announced Slovak transport minister Arpad Ersek on Monday.

"Transport is halted between Bratislava and Gabcikovo water dam due to ice flows. We are monitoring the situation day by day. We are doing out best to ensure that the river traffic is safe," stressed Ersek.

The minister added icebreakers would be used to help transportation in the Danube waterway.

The Slovak transport authority issued a transport ban on Jan. 20 between Bratislava and the Gabcikovo water dam. Transport on the Hungarian side of the Danube is suspended as well.

The Danube runs for 172 km in Slovakia and is connected with Western Europe and the Balkans. In 2015, the total value of goods transported on the Slovak part of the Danube was 5.72 million tons.
