ZAGREB, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Zdravko Mamic, former vice-president of the Croatian Football Federation and football club Dinamo's executive president, was shot and wounded on Tuesday near Tomislavgrad in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

According to latest information from Croatian Football Federation, Mamic was wounded in the leg when he was leaving his father's grave in the village Zidine. At the moment of shooting, he was in the group of people, mostly relatives. He received medical treatment in Tomislavgrad and later left for Croatian capital Zagreb in his own car with a driver.

"It is certainly not the first, but surely the worst and most dangerous crime against football official so far. Unfortunately, due to the way in which the media and a part of the public accept these incidents with the known 'but', while at the same time the police and the judiciary do not show an overwhelming desire to capture attackers, prosecute them or punish, it is no surprise that such an atmosphere only encourage hooligans and terrorists, which as a consequence had this attack," Croatian Football Federation said in a press release after the shooting.

Zdravko Mamic is a controversial and influential football official. He was long considered the master of Croatian football, but now acts only as a football club Dinamo's adviser and has no executive positions in Croatian football since July 2016.

Mamic is on trial along with three other men on suspicion of graft that allegedly cost the club and the state about 17.2 million euros, while one of the controversial transactions is the one from the transfer of Luka Modric, Real Madrid's midfielder, who received financial backing from Mamic in his early career.
