ANKARA, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Ahmet San, the chairman of Turkey's Konyaspor football club, resigned Tuesday over his alleged links to the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), which believed to be behind last year's coup attempt.

On Monday, as part of the FETO probe, San was interrogated over his use of ByLock, a smartphone application allegedly used by FETO members for communication during the coup night, according to state-run Anadolu-Agency.

After being released from Konya prosecutor's office, San announced on Tuesday to resign from his chairman position in order not to "harm" his club.

In the statement on the club's website, San said that he had no connection with the "evil" organization and believed "his innocence" would be proven.

Meanwhile, Omer Catkic, former goalkeeper of Turkey's national football team, was also arrested as part of the FETO probe.

The Turkish government blames the FETO's U.S.-based leader Fethullah Gulen for orchestrating the 2016 failed coup attempt, which left 249 people dead and some 2,200 injured.

The Turkish government has launched a massive crackdown on Gulen's supporters in the aftermath of the coup attempt. Enditem
