MADRID, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The sixth Encierro or bull run in San Fermin Fiestas in Spain's northern city of Pamplona ended on Wednesday with six runners taken to hospital for various injuries.

Spanish media reported that the Encierro, which was televised live on national television, was a rapid affair with six fighting bulls covering 875 meters from their overnight holding pens to the city's bullring in two minutes and 16 seconds.

Fortunately none of the hundreds of people running alongside the bulls were gored, but the speed of the Encierro led to a lot of falls which provoked the injuries.

Of the six taken to hospital, two suffered head injuries, two were injured in the chest and two more injured in their legs, although none of the injuries are thought to be life threatening.

The Encierros are the best known event of the annual celebration, which attracts around 700,000 visitors a year to the nine days of celebration, which was made famous by Ernest Hemingway in his 1920's novel Fiesta -- The Sun Also Rises.
