MANILA, July 10 (Xinhua) -- A magnitude-5.4 earthquake rocked Ormoc City in the central Philippines anew on Monday, causing panic among the residents who are still recovering from the trauma after a magnitude-6.5 earthquake hit the same region last week.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the epicenter of the quake that hit Leyte Province at 9:41 a.m. local time was recorded 15 km northeast of Ormoc City with a depth 6 km.

So far the institute said it has recorded two aftershocks after the initial quake.

Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez told the local radio DZBB that dozens of students panicked and some passed out as a result.

Last Thursday, a magnitude-6.5 tremor also hit the province, killing at least two. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said at least 329 people were also injured.

After the July 6 earthquake, the institute said that it has recorded more than 600 aftershocks.

The institute said that the tremor that hit Ormoc City on Monday is an aftershock of the magnitude 6.5 quake that shook the region last Thursday.
