MANILA, July 6 (Xinhua) -- A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck the central Philippines on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

The institute said in a report that the quake, which rocked 8 km southwest of Jaro in Leyte province at 4:03 p.m., was 2 km in depth.

The institute said the quake was tectonic in origin, and was also felt in nearby provinces in the central Philippines, including Cebu City, Negros Occidental and Surigao del Norte.

No report of damages has been recorded so far but it said aftershocks are expected.

It also said no tsunami is expected from the quake because it happened on land.

Radio reports said that quake caused students to panic and triggered power outages in those provinces.
