NEW DELHI, June 28 (Xinhua) -- A global ransomware attack has hit India's largest container port in Mumbai and affected operations at one of the three terminals at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), officials said Wednesday.

The systems were hit Tuesday night as a fallout of the ransomware attack called Petya, which reportedly caused disruptions at several central banks and many large corporations in Europe and the United States.

A local news agency quoted a JNPT official as saying that the operations at Gateway Terminals India (GTI) have come to a standstill due to the malware attack.

The current attacks came weeks after malware named Wanna Cry Ransomware affected systems across the globe, taking down computer systems, locking up critical data and demanding bitcoins as ransom for its release.

In India, 102 computer systems of the Andhra Pradesh police were hacked and a Nissan Renault car production plant in Chennai (Tamil Nadu) was halted because of the Wanna Cry Ransomware attack last month.

Following the attack, India's federal government advised officers working in sensitive and strategic fields to use stand-alone computers to avert ransomeware attacks.

Ransomware, a type of malicious software, blocks access to victim's data or threatens to publish or delete it until ransom is paid.
