Afghan conflict kills 3 militants, wounds 7 in northern province

TALUQAN, Afghanistan, May 26 (Xinhua) -- At least three militants have been killed and seven others injured as fighting erupted in Ashkamish district of the northern Afghan province of Takhar early Friday, district police chief Abdul Rahman Ashkamishi said.

Units of police, according to the official, launched coordinated offensive against Taliban hideouts in Koka Balaq locality in the wee hours of Friday and after killing three insurgents on the spot and injuring seven others forced the Taliban fighters to flee the area.

One policeman has also been injured in the fighting, the official added.

The Taliban militants have not commented on the situation.

Takhar province with Taluqan as its capital 245 km north of Kabul has been the scene of Taliban-led insurgency over the past few years.
