Afghan gov't arrests 41 suspected drug traffickers in one month

KABUL, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's Counter-Narcotic Police arrested 41 people on charges of involvement in drug trafficking over the past one month, said a statement of Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF) released here on Wednesday.

According to the statement, more than 315 kg heroin, 203 kg opium poppy and more than 3.5 tons hashish are among the contraband confiscated by police from the possessions of the arrested persons.

The cases are under investigation and those found involved in drug trafficking would be prosecuted in accordance with the law of the land, the statement said.

Afghanistan produced 4,800 tons of opium poppy, the raw material used in producing heroin, in 2016 against 3,300 tons of the contraband harvested in 2015.
