ALGIERS, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Algerian army troops killed a drug trafficker and arrested four others in a wide-scale operation in the southernmost province of Adrar, Defense Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

"As part of the fight against terrorism, a detachment of the National People's Army shot down a drug trafficker and arrested four others at the Military Sector of Adrar, 1,000 km south west Algiers," noted the statement.

An RPK-type machine-gun, a Kalashnikov-type machine gun, three ammunition loaders, 2.6 quintals of treated cannabis, two vehicles and a satellite phone were retrieved during this operation.

In the eastern province of Skikda, army troops discovered on Thursday a bunker containing two automatic pistols, a shotgun, a quantity of ammunition, computer equipment, medicines and bomb making tools, added the source.

Located in a region plagued by unprecedented security and political instability, Algeria faces ongoing terrorist threats. Thousands of troops have been deployed on the western, southern and eastern borders of Algeria to thwart potential intrusion of terrorists and drug traffickers. Enditem
