UNITED NATIONS, May 23 (Xinhua) -- United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday strongly condemned the "horrific" terrorist attack in Manchester, Britain.

On Monday night, a suicide terror attack took place at Manchester Arena at the end of a pop concert, killing at least 22 people, several of whom were children, while injuring 59 others.

Guterres "expresses his deep sympathy and solidarity to the people and Government of the United Kingdom and hopes that those responsible for this unjustifiable violence will be swiftly brought to justice," said a statement released by his spokesperson.

"The Secretary-General conveys his heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those killed, and wishes the injured a full and speedy recovery," it added.

The police arrested a 23-year-old in connection with the attack. The so-called Islamic State terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
