Dutch express sympathy to Manchester terror victims

THE HAGUE, May 23 (Xinhua) -- The Dutch authorities and football club Ajax have expressed sympathy towards victims of the suicide terror attack that killed at least 22 innocent people and injured over 50 others at Manchester Arena on Monday night.

On Tuesday morning, Dutch King Willem-Alexander said on Facebook, "The terrifying attack in Manchester that has taken so many young victims has hit us deeply. We live immensely with all the parents who have received the terrible news that their child has died and with all family members and friends who are now immersed in mourning. Those who are in anxious uncertainty about the fate of their loved ones are on our thoughts."

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte tweeted, "terrible news from Manchester where beautiful evening ended in a drama. Thoughts on casualties. Our sympathy sent to Prime Minister May."

"From Amsterdam to Manchester with love," said Dutch football club Ajax. The club is to play against Manchester United for the Europa League final in Stockholm on Wednesday.

"It is still unclear what the impact of the suicide attack for tomorrow's match in Stockholm. Our thoughts are with the victims and the loved ones of those affected," the club said in a statement.

The threat level in the Netherlands remains unchanged, tweeted Dick Schoof, Dutch National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security (NCTV). The "substantial" level is only one level lower than the highest called "critical" on a scale of one to five.

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs said till Tuesday morning there is no indication that Dutch nationals are among the victims in Manchester.

At least 22 people, including children, were killed and 59 injured in the suicide terror attack at a pop concert in Manchester, police confirmed early Tuesday.

The suicide bombing struck as thousands of fans were about to leave a pop concert by American singer Ariana Grande at Manchester Arena on Monday night. The singer's fans were mostly teenage girls. British police said the attacker, who died at the arena, acted alone.
