NAIROBI, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday mourned the 22 people killed in a suspected terrorist attack during a pop concert by U.S. star Ariana Grande in the northwest English city of Manchester, Britain.

In a statement issued in Nairobi, Kenyatta, whose country has suffered terrorist attacks especially on its northeast border, said the country will stand with British Prime Minister Theresa May in the fight against extremism.

"Kenya knows what it is like to suffer a tragedy such as this, so our hearts go out to the UK, and especially to the families which have woken to devastating news this morning," he said.

At least 59 were injured after a suspected terrorist attack at the Manchester Arena after thousands of gig-goers were packed into the venue to see American singer when the explosion occurred at around 10:30 p.m. on Monday evening.

The area around the arena was swamped with police and emergency services and approach roads were cordoned off.

"We share a long history with the UK; we remain allies and partners. I have assured the Prime Minister, May, that she will have any help we can give; and that we will stand with her and with her country in the fight against extremism," Kenyatta added.

British police said the incident was being treated as a terrorist incident. Police carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect device several hours after the blast.
