ATHENS, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- A 55-year-old man died while climbing Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece, Greek Fire Brigade said on Tuesday. It is the second fatality reported on the 2,917-meter mountain within a week.
The man's friend, who had accompanied him on the climb, alerted the authorities Monday evening that the former had been severely injured in a fall.
Following rescue operations which lasted till the early hours of Tuesday, the climber's body was recovered.
On Saturday, a 25-year-old climber died and his friend was injured on Mount Olympus under similar circumstances. On Sunday, two more climbers were evacuated by helicopter after suffering injuries.
Authorities advise climbers to take all appropriate safety measures while attempting to climb the mountain, particularly as the temperature has dropped.
Each year, thousands of people climb Mount Olympus, the home of the Greek gods, according to ancient Greek mythology.
