Romanian PM congratulates climber for summiting Everest

BUCHAREST, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Romanian Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu congratulated national climber Horia Colibasanu on his successful climbing of the Everest (Chomolungma) on Tuesday, without bottled oxygen or the help of a Sherpa team.

"Colibasanu became the first Romanian alpinist to climb the Everest without additional oxygen or Sherpa support!" Grindeanu wrote on Tuesday in his social media account, adding "your perseverance is an example to us all!"

Colibasanu on Tuesday climbed the Everest (8,848 meters). He was reportedly in good condition and feeling healthy as he made his way back to Base Camp.

The Everest is the 8th over-8000-meter peak conquered by Colibasanu, who has successfully climbed to the top of K2 (8,811 meters), Manaslu (8,163 meters), Dhaulagiri (8,167 meters), Shishapangma (8,027 meters), Annapurna (8,091 meters), Makalu (8,463 meters), and Lhotse (8,516 meters). He made all his ascents without using bottled oxygen.

The best climber in Romania wants to climb all the 14 peaks over 8,000 meters in the world.

Colibasanu, 40, is a dentist and lives in Timisoara, western Romania. He started to climb mountains outside his country at the age of 21.
