UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday strongly condemned the "outrageous attacks" against UN peacekeepers in Mali during the day, which led to five deaths.

The secretary-general conveyed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished a swift recovery to the injured, said his spokesman in a statement.

Guterres paid tribute to the dedication of the brave women and men of the UN mission in Mali.

He said that attacks targeting UN peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law and that sanctions can be applied against those responsible.

Guterres reaffirmed the world organization's steadfast support for the Malian people in their quest for peace and stability in Mali and in the Sahel region, the statement said.

In attacks on the UN mission in Mali in Menaka and Mopti regions, four peacekeepers and a Malian soldier were killed and 21 others were wounded.
