WINDHOEK, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's estimated population increased from 2,113,077 in 2011 to 2,324,388 in 2016, representing a 10 percent increase, according to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA).
The agency on Tuesday released the Namibia Intercensal Demographic Survey (NIDS) of 2016 report, which contains information on population structures and composition, population characteristics, education and literacy, population trends as well as household and housing characteristics.
NSA Statistician General Alex Shimuafeni said the Intercensal surveys are conducted five years between the censuses hence the NIDS 2016 was conducted five years between the 2011 Population and Housing Census and the next Census of 2021.
According to Shimuhameni, with regards to sex distribution, there were more females (51.4 percent) than males (48.6 percent) in Namibia in 2016.
"This ratio somehow remains the same as with the 2011 figures of 51.6 percent and 48.4 percent respectively. Looking at the population distribution at regional level, the Khomas region recorded the highest number of people (415,780), followed by Ohangwena (255,510) and Omusati regions (249,885)," he said.
Shimuhameni said the Namibian population was estimated to have grown by 1.9 percent annually between 2011 and 2016 as compared to 1.4 that was recorded in 2011.
Meanwhile the 2016 NIDS report also revealed that urban regions were growing at a faster rate compared to rural regions and that the literacy rate for population aged 15 years and above remained the same since 2011 at 88.7 percent.
The statistician said that the information in the report is useful for evidence-based planning and decision making at national and regional levels as well as monitor development agendas such as Africa Agenda 2063 and Sustainable Development Goals.
