NEW DELHI, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- India's Nehru-Gandhi scion Rahul Gandhi is likely to be elevated as chief of the country's main opposition Congress party on Dec. 4, sources said.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the top leaders of the Congress party at its incumbent chief and Rahul's mother Sonia Gandhi's residence in the Indian capital Monday, sources said.
However, if someone emerges as a contestant for the party president post, then the Congress party will hold an election on Dec. 15 and the results will be declared on Dec. 19.
"As of now, there are no contenders for the post and 47-year-old Rahul Gandhi is likely to be elected as the Congress president unopposed," sources said.
Sonia Gandhi, now 70, has been unwell in recent years and scaled down her public appearances because of the same.
She said last month that her son would be elevated as Congress chief soon amid growing clamor for Rahul Gandhi to take over the reins of the party, particularly from youth leaders.
