NEW DELHI, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Indian police have arrested seven people in connection with Sunday's boat tragedy in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh that claimed 22 lives.

The boat overloaded with 38 tourists capsized in the Krishna river in the state's Vijaywada district, 275 km from capital Hyderabad, late Sunday evening.

"The seven arrested are directors of a river boating and adventure company that operated the tourist boat illegally in the river on that day," a police official said Friday.

The arrests came after a preliminary probe suggested that the boat did not have the necessary licence to operate in the river.

"The boat's operator did not have the necessary government permission to ferry people. All the accused have been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder," the official said.

Boat tragedies are common in India, mainly because of overloading and scant regard for law. A boat accident in northern India in September killed 20 people.
