MOSCOW, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- The deadly flood in a Russian diamond mine in last August was mainly caused by engineering errors in the construction project, a Russian government agency said Friday.

According to the Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service of Russia (Rostekhnadzor), the Mir underground mine of Russia's top diamond producer Alrosa, located in the northeastern Sakha Republic, was flooded on Aug. 4 by some 300,000 cubic meters of water from a neighboring abandoned quarry. Eight miners were confirmed dead in the accident.

The investigative commission set up by Rostekhnadzor has recently concluded that the engineering errors in the construction project and the violation of industrial safety rules were the two main causes of the disaster.

The Rostekhnadzor has estimated the economic losses from the mine flood at 10.216 billion rubles (about 172.5 million U.S. dollars).
