ANKARA, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the Tuesday terrorist attack in New York that killed 8 people.

"We strongly condemn the attack and extend our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the attack," a written statement said.

The victims were killed when a motorist drove onto a pedestrian and cycling path near the West Side Highway in Manhattan.

Local police has shot dead the attacker and described the attack as an "act of terror."

On his weekly press conference, Turkish Presidential spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin also said that Turkey condemns the attack with the strongest terms.

Kalin also warned that debates on the name or the identity of the attacker should not be made, saying it's wrong to use terms like radical Islamic terrorism when the attacker is Muslim.

Media reports that cited law enforcement sources identified the suspect as Sayfullo Saipov, 29, from Uzbekistan, who entered the U.S. in 2010.
