NEW DELHI, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday flagged off a marathon in the national capital to commemorate the 142nd birth anniversary of the country's first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

A large number of people took part in the "Run for Unity" that started from Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium and culminated at India Gate.

"We salute Sardar Patel on his Jayanti. His momentous service and monumental contribution to India can never be forgotten," he tweeted.

Patel was an Indian barrister and statesman, and a founding father of India who played a leading role in the country's struggle for independence and guided its integration into a united, independent nation.
