NEW DELHI, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday lambasted critics and opposition for criticising his government over handling of country's economy.

Modi stated a "handful of people" were trying to spread a contagion of pessimism based on the slowdown of the last economic quarter, when growth slowed to 5.7 percent, the lowest in three years.

"There are some people who sleep well only after they spread a feeling of pessimism. We need to recognise such people," Modi said while addressing the Golden Jubilee Year Celebrations of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India, ICSI in New Delhi.

Yashwant Sinha, a senior leader from ruling Bhartiya Janta Party last week sparked a huge debate over the state of the economy. His concerns were echoed by former finance minister and senior Congress party leader P Chidambaram.

Modi while acknowledging the decline in growth in the previous quarter said the government was committed to reversing the setback to growth in the April-June quarter.

"The government is committed to reversing this trend. Several important reform related decisions have been taken and this process will continue," Modi said. "The government will take the country to a new league of development in the years to come."

The BJP government has been accused of carrying out a major decision of demonetisation and implementation of new national sales tax (GST) in haste, thereby threatening country's economy.
