Food poisoning fatalities surge in Vietnam in January-October period

HO CHI MINH CITY, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam faced 93 food poisoning cases from January to October, which killed 20 people and sickened 2,854 others, the Preventive Health Department said Monday.

In October, the country witnessed nine food poisoning cases which affected 392 local people, including three fatalities.

Vietnam saw 111 food poisoning cases which sickened 3,283 people and claimed nine lives in the first 10 months of last year.

In the first 10 months of this year, the country detected 148,500 dengue fever patients, including 30 deaths, nearly 81,600 foot-and-mouth disease cases, and 616 viral encephalitis sufferers, including 21 deaths, and 38 Zika patients.

Vietnam currently has 209,800 HIV carriers, of whom 90,500 have become AIDS patients, the department said. To date, some 92,800 people in the country have died of AIDS-related diseases.
