Vietnam's traffic accidents decline in 10 months

HO CHI MINH CITY, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Between January and October, 16,167 traffic accidents occurred in Vietnam, killing 6,827 people, severely injuring 4,052 people and lightly hurting 9,229 others, the Traffic Police Department said Monday.

The numbers of traffic accidents, deaths and severe injuries and slight injuries caused by the accidents declined, by 6.3 percent, 4.3 percent, 15.8 percent and 11.3 percent respectively from a year earlier.

Among the trafic accidents, 130 rail accidents killed 112 people and injured 39 others, and 102 waterway and maritime accidents that claimed 52 human lives and hurt 19 people.

On average, in the first 10 months of this year, Vietnam each day saw 53 traffic accidents which claimed 22 lives and injured 43 people.

Last year, 21,589 traffic accidents occurred in Vietnam, killing 8,685 people, severely injuring 6,180 people and slightly hurting 13,100 others, said the department.
