Myanmar consul general killed in road accident in India

NEW DELHI, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- A consul general of Myanmar was killed and three others were critically injured Friday in a road accident in India's eastern state of Jharkhand, police said.

The consul general, Pyi Soe, was killed in Giridih district, about 182 km north of Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand.

According to senior police officials, Soe was returning from Gaya in Bihar along with his wife and one official.

"Pyi Soe was returning from Gaya from a personal tour when the Toyota Innova vehicle he was travelling in was hit by a truck near Miniyaghat in Giridih," a police official said.

"Soe was declared brought dead in hospital, while as the injured were referred to a private hospital in Ranchi after being provided with first-aid at a nearest medical facility."

The Myanmar consulate general is based in Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal.

Police have registered a case and initiated investigations into the accident.

Deadly road accidents are common in India, often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

According to an official report released last month, on average India witnessed over 400 deaths in road accidents every day during 2016.
