NEW DELHI, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- At least four students have been killed and six others injured in a road mishap on an expressway near the Indian capital, police said Monday.

"The accident occurred late Sunday afternoon when a sports utility vehicle (SUV) in which the 10 students of a private university were travelling turned turtle on the Yamuna Expressway, barely 25 km from the Indian capital," a senior police official said.

While four students in their 20s were killed on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital where the condition of four were said to be serious, he said.

"Four of them are battling for their lives at the hospital," the official said.

Eyewitnesses told cops the accident happened after one of the students who was driving the SUV lost control following a tyre burst on the high-speed corridor while overtaking a truck.

"The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. A probe has been ordered into the incident. We are also trying to nab the driver of the truck," the official said.

Road accidents are common in India and most occur due to badly maintained roads and vehicles as well as poor driving.
