PHNOM PENH, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni on Wednesday signed a royal decree to deliver a pardon to former opposition senator Hong Sok Hour at the request of Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen.

In the royal decree, the monarch said he granted amnesty to convict Hong Sok Hour, 59, who was convicted by the Appeal Court to seven years in prison on June 29, this year for falsifying a public document, using the falsified document, and inciting chaos to social security.

"Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen of the Kingdom of Cambodia must take responsibility to implement this royal decree from the day of signature," the king wrote.

Sok Hour is a former senator of the Sam Rainsy Party that was merged with the Human Rights Party in late 2012 to form a major opposition party called the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP).

He was arrested in August 2015 in Phnom Penh after posting to Facebook a fake version of a border treaty signed between Cambodia and Vietnam in 1979.

The pardon came after Sok Hour sent Hun Sen a written apology last month, expressing his regret for using the fake document to attack the Cambodian government in the border issue with Vietnam.
