LONDON, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- English Premier League side Everton sacked manager Ronald Koeman on Monday as they had dropped to the relegation zone after Sunday's 5-2 defeat to Arsenal.

The club announced the decision in a statement, saying "Chairman Bill Kenwright, the Board of Directors and Major Shareholder Farhad Moshiri would all like to express their gratitude to Ronald for the service he has given to the Club over the past 16 months and for guiding the club to seventh place in last season's Premier League campaign."

Everton won just two of their nine league games this season and have slipped to 18th place.

The 54-year-old became the third Premier League manager to be sacked this season, following his Dutch compatriot Frank de Boer from Crystal Palace and Craig Shakespeare from Leicester.
