Iran welcomes Saudi-Iraq normalization of relations

TEHRAN, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- A senior Iranian official on Monday welcomed the recent moves for normalization of ties between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, Press TV reported.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, an adviser to Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, also said that Riyadh should stop its "destructive and unconstructive behavior" in the region.

The comments by Amir-Abdollahian followed the recent visit by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi- to Riyadh.

On Sunday, Abadi took part in the first meeting of the joint Saudi-Iraqi coordination council aimed at enhancing cooperation.

"If relations between Saudi Arabia and Iraq are normalized and Riyadh's destructive and unconstructive behavior is halted, it is a positive development," Abdollahian was quoted as saying.

He also draw on the impact of new regional developments on Iraq-Iran relations, saying that the Islamic Republic was not worried about the rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

"The strategic relationship between Tehran and Baghdad is firm and lasting," he stressed.
