Tokyo stocks gain ground in morning after LDP election win

TOKYO, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks gained ground Monday morning as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling Liberal Democratic Party's win in Sunday's general election raised market hopes for economic and political stability.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 200.61 points, or 0.93 percent, from Friday to 21,658.25.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 13.68 points, or 0.79 percent, to 1,744.32.

Pulp and paper, insurance, and iron and steel issues comprised those that gained the most by the morning break.
