Ruling party gains overwhelming victory in mayoral election in Georgia

TBILISI, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Preliminary data showed on Sunday that in all other municipal mayoral races the ruling Georgian Dream--Democratic Georgia party candidates won the mayoral elections with a single vote.

Among them, the ruling Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia candidate, Kakha Kaladze had garnered 51.3 percent of the vote, winning the mayoral office of Tbilisi, the capital of the country, without runoff elections.

Mayoral races in six cities across the country will go into second round polls, according to Georgia's Central Election Commission (CEC) on Sunday.

A second round of mayoral elections would be needed in six municipalities across Georgia, says chairperson of the CEC, Tamar Zhvania, based on preliminary results on Sunday.

The municipalities are Kutaisi, Ozurgeti, and Martvili in western Georgia, and Kazbegi, Khashuri, and Borjomi in eastern Georgia.

According to the electoral code, the runoffs will be held before November 15, no later than the 25th day after the first round of elections.

Georgia kicked off its local elections across the country on Saturday,voting for 2,058 members of 64 city councils and 64 municipal mayors.
