LONDON, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Crimes recorded by police in England and Wales has passed the five million mark for the first time in 10 years, representing an increase of 13 percent year-on-year, official UK figures said Thursday.

The British Office for National Statistics (ONS) said crimes in the 12 months to June were up from 4.6 million of the previous year.

Crime categorised as "violent" rose by 19 percent, with rises in offences including stalking and harassment, the office said.

The ONS said that there was a rise of 26 percent in the number of crimes involving a knife, compared to the last year. The police also recorded 711 deaths caused by illegal driving, a six-percent increase since the previous year.

Meanwhile, the Crime Survey for England and Wales, based on people's experiences, suggested there were 10.8 million offences.

The survey, published on the same day as the official crime statistics, included crimes that people do not report to police.

When comparing like-for-like crimes, the survey reported a nine percent reduction compared with the previous year.

The British Home Office said on Tuesday that a total of 80,393 offenses driven by hate-related motives have been registered in England and Wales in 2016-2017.

According to the Home Office, most of the hate crimes recorded, or 78 percent, were committed on a racial basis, while sexual orientation-related hate crimes were the runner-up, constituting a total of 11 percent.
