DOHA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Qatar Airways will launch direct flights to Penang, the second Malaysian destination, next February, as part of its ambitious global expansion plans, Qatari local media on Wednesday.

"Malaysia has long been one of our most sought-after destinations, we are delighted to launch a new direct service to Penang, offering our passengers a second gateway into the country," said Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker.

Qatar Airways will fly three times a week to Penang with its state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the report said.

Qatar airways first launched service to Malaysia in December 2001, and currently operates a triple-daily service to Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital.

Qatar Airways recently launched direct flights to different destinations, as part of its rapid global expansion strategy, especially after the gulf crisis erupted on June 5, when the Arab countries severed diplomatic and transportation links with Doha.

Qatar airways is the national carrier of Qatar and one of the fastest-growing airlines operating one of the youngest fleets in the world, which is connecting more than 150 destinations around the world.
