LAGOS, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria's main opposition party said Wednesday it is stronger and set to dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC) from power in 2019.

Godswill Akpabio, a prominent figure of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), made this known to reporters in Abuja, the nation's capital city after the Senate Caucus met.

Akpabio, a former governor of oil rich Akwa Ibom State, said a teeming number of stalwarts of other political parties were on their way to the main opposition party in droves.

The politician, who is now a serving Senator at the caucus have reviewed the state of the party and re-evaluated the situation, state by state, and found out that the party is stronger than it was.

"We also want to urge the leadership of the party at the national level to open the door wide open between now and the next convention to receive them," he added.

Akpabio said the caucus also discussed the guideline for the forthcoming national convention of the PDP in order to make meaningful contributions to the meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC).

Meanwhile, a former governor of southwest state of Ogun, Gbenga Daniel has declared his intention to contest for the national chairmanship of the party in Abuja.

According to Daniel, his ultimate goal is to work toward the victory of our party in the 2019 general elections and in all other elections in between.

He said the target also included bringing back many of the party's members, who had left, adding that this was not the time to start passing the buck.

He said it was time to move on, a time to start afresh.

The former governor stressed the need for a more focused, disciplined and reinvigorated PDP, adding that realizing such values transcended the desire to merely hold office.

He said his quest to become national chairman of the party was a clarion call to provide an alternative political platform to offer distinctive leadership Nigeria so much desired.

Nigeria is scheduled to hold general elections in February 2019.
