LONDON, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Northern Ireland Electricity Networks said Monday that 16,000 customers are without power after debris of Storm Ophelia damaged power lines.

Increasing wind speeds may cause further power outages in the part of Britain, reports said.

Remnants of the hurricane -- that was downgraded after making its way across the Atlantic -- battered Britain's west coast on Monday afternoon, with gusts of up to 80 mph, exactly 30 years after the Great Storm of 1987 killed 18 people.

Three people have been killed as hurricane-force winds from Storm Ophelia continue to batter Ireland and head toward Britain.

Fears about the impact of strong winds have seen many public services in Northern Ireland closed, with schools, government buildings and courts among the services affected, the reports added.
