7 killed as building collapses in Kenya

NAIROBI, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed on Wednesday when a four-story building under construction in collapsed in Western Kenya, official confirmed on Thursday.

Pius Masai Mwachi, National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) Deputy Director and Communication Officer, said 22 people have been hospitalized with various injuries after the building collapsed in Kisii County.

"A total of seven people have been confirmed dead and 22 others hospitalized. A male adult is still missing. Emergency rescue operations have been called off," Mwachi said.

He said the bodies of the seven were pulled out of the rubble at Membe area in Kisii town. Mwachi said many were pulled out of the building and rushed to hospital where they are recuperating.

Mwachi said rescue operations were hampered by heavy rains pounding the area.
