TOKYO, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. CH-53 military helicopter burst into fire when landing near a military training area in northern Okinawa on Wednesday, said Japan's Defense Ministry.

People on board the chopper escaped with no injures, said the ministry.

Local fire department said it received an emergency phone call around 5:35 p.m. local time (GMT 0835) from a resident who said that a U.S. military aircraft had crashed and black smoke could be seen.

The incident happened on a piece of privately-owned vacant land in Takae village in the Kunigami district of Okinawa Prefecture, said local media quoting police sources.

The chopper belongs to the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma and has been used to transport personnel, said local reports.
