TOKYO, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The benchmark Nikkei stock index closed at a more than two-year high on Monday as Wall Street's solid lead from late last week coupled with the yen's retreat against the U.S. dollar buoyed the market mood.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 44.50 points, or 0.22 percent, from Friday to close the day at 20,400.78, marking its highest closing level since Aug. 18, 2015.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, shed 1.13 points, or 0.07 percent, lower to finish at 1,673.62.

Rubber product, iron and steel, and insurance-related issues comprised those that advanced the most by the close of play, and rising issues beat falling ones by 1,116 to 838 on the First Section.

On the main section on Monday, 1,355.84 million shares changed hands, dropping from Friday's volume of 1,731.36 million shares.

The turnover on the first trading day of the week totaled 2,063.4 billion yen (18.28 billion U.S. dollars).
