NEW DELHI, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Two medium-range earthquakes hit India's Andaman and Nicobar islands in the southeast Sunday night, officials said Monday.
However, there have been no reports of any casualty or damage to properties.
"The first quake that hit the archipelago was of 4.7 magnitude while the second was of 4.5 magnitude. The quakes took place within a span of two hours," a meteorological official said.
The epicentre of the two quakes was in the Andaman Islands region and occurred at a depth of 10 km, the National Centre for Seismology said.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands, one of the seven central government-controlled territories of India, are a group of islands at the juncture of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea.
The territory is 150 km north of Aceh in Indonesia and separated from Thailand and Myanmar by the Andaman Sea. It comprises of two island groups, the Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands.
The Andaman and Nicobar islands fall in the seismic zone and are prone to quakes.
