MANILA, April 8 (Xinhua) -- A third moderate earthquake of 5.6 magnitude hit the northern Philippines on Saturday, the Philippines' chief volcanologist said.

Renato Solidum of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said in a radio interview the epicenter of the quake that struck 3:07 p.m. was 2 km northwest or west of Mabini town in Batangas province.

Solidum added the quake, which struck at a depth of 4 km. was felt in many areas of the province and nearby provinces Cavite and Metro Manila. "There is no tsunami threat," he said, adding the quake was tectonic in origin.

He said Batangas province is experiencing "earthquake swarm or series of earthquakes" following the 5.4 magnitude earthquake that hit the province last Tuesday night.

In a separate report, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said Saturday it had recorded two earthquakes of 5.7 and 5.9 magnitude on Saturday in nearby Mindoro province.

The USGS said the tremor struck 3:08 p.m. and 3:09 p.m. with an epicenter 13 km northeast of Mindoro province. It said the quake struck at a depth of 42 km.

The USGS said the quakes were also felt in Calapan in Mindoro province, Batangas Province, and the capital of Manila.

So far the institute has not received any reports of damage or casualties.
