APEC officials propose modern measures to response to natural disasters

HANOI, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- The two-day Senior Disaster Management Officials Forum within Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2017 concluded in Vietnam's central Nghe An province on Friday, making recommendations to APEC leaders on strengthening inter-regional cooperation and technological innovation for more effective response to natural disasters.

The recommendations included taking new scientific and technological measures to assist policy-making process in natural disaster prevention and control, and response to climate change; and fostering research and application in minimizing impacts of natural disasters, especially landslides, flash floods, typhoons, earthquakes and seawater encroachment.

The recommendations also consisted of prioritizing investment in information and communications technology infrastructure for better natural disaster forecast and warning; intensifying scientific and technological application in natural disaster risk management basing on the community, especially at grassroots level; beefing up cooperation among APEC economies on relevant information sharing; and fostering cooperation of private sector, research and training facilities and communities in natural disaster response.
