NEW DELHI, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- At least 24 students have been injured in a road accident in the western Indian state of Rajasthan Friday, police said.

"The accident occurred when a school bus, carrying some 30 students, rammed into a tree at Khandela in the state's Sikar district," a senior police official said.

Though no one has been killed in the incident, all the injured have been rushed to a nearby hospital by residents, where the condition of some are said to be serious, he said.

"We have informed the parents of the injured students," the official said.

Eyewitnesses told cops that the accident occurred after the bus driver lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid a biker coming from the opposite side.

"A probe has been ordered into the incident," the official added.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
