8 killed, over 30 missing in boat capsizing in India

NEW DELHI, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people were killed and over 30 others missing when an overcrowded boat capsized Thursday in northern India, police said.

The boat capsized in River Yaumna in Bagpat district in the outskirts of Indian capital city New Delhi.

"Today a boat capsized in Bagpat district falling in National Capital Region (NCR) resulting in deaths of several people," a police official posted at superintendent of police office in Bagpat told Xinhua. "Eight bodies have been fished out so far. Twelve others were rescued alive and have been admitted in local hospital."

According to the official, the boat was carrying around 60 people when it capsized.

"The search for remaining 30 others is going on in full swing," the official said.

Following boat capsize, the official said they rushed police and disaster management officials to the spot to carry out rescue work.

"We have pressed in our men at several spot along the stretch of river to search for missing," the official said. "It is feared the death toll in the tragedy might go up."

Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh has expressed grief over the deaths in boat capsize tragedy and announced a compensation of 3,121 U. S. dollars to each family that have lost its member in the accident.

In April this year, 13 people drowned after boat carrying them capsized in southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
